Aroostook,
"The County"

For those campers after a true wilderness experience, for the ones who like to rough it, Aroostook County can be a slice of Heaven on Earth.

Hunters can move stealthily through the deep woods, canoeists can ply pristine rivers and test their skills against the rapids, hikers can climb back country hills and mountains for unspoiled view and anglers can wake up beside a beautiful lake and cast a line as the sun rises, with the only sounds of chirping birds and the soft whine of their reels.

Aroostook County offers many different outdoor pursuits by virtue of its size. Mainers refer to it as simply "The County", a typical Yankee understatement about an area that encompasses 6,543 square miles.

The County is known mostly for its vastness and two industries: potatoes and lumber. When it comes to recreation, it's the exceptionally scenic Allagash Wilderness Waterway that's thought of first.

The nearly 100-mile waterway is a corridor along the north flowing Allagash River, which actually starts in Piscataquis County. Open year-round, the waterway is renowned for its flatwater/whitewater canoe trips mainly and its brook trout fishing, hiking, swimming, ranger-maintained campsites and diverse scenery and wildlife, ranging from marsh to meadow and Canada Geese to Moose. Canoe trips can last hours or days--even weeks--and can be run on your own or professionally guided. It's not surprising that Aroostook is an indian word meaning "beautiful river."

Northern Maine is a paradise for hunters and fishermen. Anglers will want to head to the Eagle Lake area and Echo Lake Brook. The 5.592-acre Gordon Manuel Wildlife Management Area in Hodgdon should appeal to outdoor enthusiasts.

But Aroostook County is not exclusively wildlife, wilderness and vast fields. Its' people are known to be down-to-earth, hard working and friendly. The population centers have unpretentious attractions their residents are proud of which celebrate and commemorate the riches of the area.

In Patten visit the Lumberman's Village and learn the history of lumbering in Northern Maine. At Caribou visit the eclectic Nylander Museum.

The potato industry is celebrated in Fort Fairfield each July during the Potato Blossom Festival, timed to coincide when potato blossoms appear.

Presque Isle, the biggest community in Aroostook, boasts the Aroostook Centre Mall--a true novelty in the region--and hosts the Northern Maine Fair each August.

Aroostook County is bordered on three sides by Canada. The Canadian influence is still powerful.
